There are a few themes in gaming that no matter how much they are used (or overused), still seem to attract my attention.

In my opinion one of the biggest justifications I look for with games is re-playability and this has it in abundance. During the game, players will use an action point system to move around the ship, fight deckhands and guards, loot treasure, and battle the raging inferno. No two games ever feel the same and the strong player interaction really promotes the feeling of a true co-operative experience, something that isn’t always guaranteed. The sheer number of components required to package any board game means that it’s simply not cost effective for publishers to constantly produce if they can’t guarantee the game won’t immediately sell.

However that does push the learning curve up for new players as there will be more actions they can take, more things to track and rules to remember. Theme: Dead Men Tell No Tales is all about pirates raiding a burning ghost ship full of skeletons and other horrors. The fatigue tracker is especially nice, and adds a good feel to the player board versus just having tokens that a play may add to their board. Sure, players have the chance to react to the random outcomes, but it still doesn’t help balance the game. After giving Dead Men Tell No Tales a few plays, I could definitely see an influence from some older cooperative games.The art in DMTNT is wonderful and The Kraken expansion (and miniature upgrade kit) truly elevates the game and creates a much more immersive experience.
