About this deal

I can withstand a lot of OW storylines, but this one just decimated Reia’s character (because of how she viewed said character’s experiences) and hurt Orpheus’s characterization as well. e. was very likely to die if she tried to escape and given no other choices) to live with someone she thought was a monster. In A Soul to Keep, there are two main characters in the book: Reia - a human girl and the FMC, and Orpheus - a Duskwalker (or a Mavka) and the MMC. The author foregoes any sort of exposition about the world we're about to delve into and instead the world building is peppered in randomly, most of the time it feels like an afterthought shoe-horned in during a scene.

Katerina was his first, and therefore the one who experienced Orpheus at his least humane, at his most dangerous. The brief companionship does little to ease his loneliness, and their lives were always, unfortunately, cut short. Reia is a decent heroine, a little too stupid to live at times but she’s very fearless, inexperienced, and impulsive so I guess it only makes sense. He has no mouth, just a tongue; his whole head is a skull with horns; he has fur, fish gills, and an extruding penis with tentacles. He became a love-sick puppy with massive separation anxiety, he had no personality except to exist to please Reia. Don’t pretend that you’ve never wanted to be railed by some human eating, dark entity that has a skull for a face – you saw the cover, you knew what you were getting yourself into, and you still chose to open this book and read it. This was gonna be a 3-star review up until the 80% mark, at which point I was genuinely angry at the way they decided to handle things, so down to 1-star we go. Just because Reia likes Orpheus and doesn't see him as a monster doesn't mean Katerinas trauma and revulsion to him isn't valid. I enjoyed the cute progression of their friendship and their inevitable love story, and I particularly liked that Reia is determined to be self-sufficient. The list of icks only continued as I read; gut rearranging sex magic, victim blaming, the overuse of the word "squelch", sex as a metric of love and care. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. And since I love a Beauty and the Beast story it really isn’t surprising I loved this one (she even reads him a children’s folktale of Beauty and the Beast… meta). He is both every horrible thing Reia has ever imagined him to be, but funnily enough is also one of the sweetest and the most thoughtful creatures she’s ever known, showing her more kindness than her own people ever had.
