About this deal

We celebrate humanity in all its God-given diversity and seek to ensure that the voices of LGBTQ+, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Christians are heard, understood and engaged with in the wider Church. The Association of Catholic Priests (ACP) should expand its role beyond being a voice of reform and become an agent of reform in the church, a meeting of its leadership team was told.

In the absence of a priest to celebrate Mass, the inability of the local community to have a Eucharistic Service THAT'S MASS, TO YOU was highlighted. The ACPs acceptance of the Creed and adherence to defined teaching of the Catholic Church has been challenged by some right wing conservative news such as The Catholic World Report.

Our tradition has received several ways of leading us towards that broader vision: we take very seriously the sacramental life of the Church, as visible expressions of the grace of God at work in our lives. So, here in Edinburgh, where the modern ecumenical movement was born, there was little mention of Church Unity this week -- or, at least, I didn't hear much mention of it. The ACP is an association for Catholic Priests who wish to have a forum, and a voice to reflect on, discuss and comment on issues affecting the Irish Church and society today. An Irish organization of Catholic priests has responded positively to the Vatican’s recent guidance about transgender people and the sacraments, with the priests group describing the guidance as a “very, very positive” step.

It was felt that "while the emergence of Pope Francis has created a positive and supportive context for the ACP in the wider church, the situation in Ireland is such that the ACP will not just need to continue with its work, but develop it further. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) placed restrictions on the association's founder, Fr Tony Flannery who is a member of the Redemptorist Congregation.

The Association of Catholic Priests is trying to organise an "Assembly of the Irish Church" in a Dublin venue on 1 May of next year, and to recruit sympathetic laity and clerics to take part. Isn't Roy Donovan's 'take' on all this reinforced by the 'Irish Catholic Vocations Office' which implies all over again that the merely baptised have opted for spectator status, to cheer from the sidelines as the ordained and the 'religious' - the 'consecrated' ones - do the truly risky and heroic work of 'following Christ'? As Roman Catholics begin to explore, belatedly, the concept of synodality, they might be puzzled to see that a system designed to guard against autocracy seems to encourage open dissent in a way that the utterances of a single leader do not. The Irish Theological Association is putting on a day on Saturday, November 26th in All Hallows College on the New Missal.
