About this deal

I love to read and review various genres with a focus on contemporary fiction, historical fiction with some mysteries/thrillers and also select nonfiction and memoirs. From segregation, to passing, to the Black lives matter movement, the author really shined in the thematic elements of the novel.

The story became a lot more interesting to me after it opened up a second timeline about a single mother in the segregated South in the 1930s-50s. As Elsie goes through Kitty’s journals, the narrative winds back to Kitty’s hardships in 1930s North Carolina and mid-century Hollywood glamour, and Elise learns that while Kitty passed as white, she was actually a light-skinned Black woman. The theme of passing is just as relevant as it was in the past, and people’s identities, backgrounds, and hardships are still just as valid and will never be overdone or tropey when the underlying causes, such as racism, permeate every facet of society and every Black American family tree. Giovanni, happy to flee cold Canada, had donned Bermuda jean shorts and a cropped, open-backed fuzzy violet sweater that displayed her ebony skin. Elise is preoccupied with managing her image and avoiding the paparazzi, until the death of neighbor Kitty Karr, Elise’s beloved mentor, who leaves a fortune to Elise and her two sisters.Kitty Karr becomes a famous Hollywood actress who has made very difficult choices in her life and has had challenging decisions made for her. Crystal Smith Paul attended Spelman College and UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television and received her master's in journalism from NYU. It is among the commonplaces of education that we often first cut off the living root and then try to replace its . Underdeveloped and/or Boring Main Characters: Elise, the older sister and our main point of view, seemed miserable in her life yet also unwilling to do anything about it until Kitty's gift which made for a chore to read. If you suspend the leaf and common sense then you may love the book as many people do but what I thought of thinking about the whole premise and giving up your family or your family giving you up none of it sounded believable.

John is one of three sisters who have been rich and famous since birth because of their parents’ talents. Public conspiracy theories had exploded after news leaked that Kitty bequeathed her entire fortune—about six hundred million dollars—to Elise and her sisters, Giovanni and Noele. She was two decades older than both Elise and Rebecca and had never been impressed with Rebecca, whose childhood playmate had been her first and only client for the last ten years. In Paul’s appealing if overlong debut, a Black Hollywood family reckons with a surprising and complicated past. What’s interesting is a character says to Elise in the present that he doesn’t believe that—there’s always a choice to be made.It was no easy feat competing with politics, and the pause in presidential tweet reports spoke to the breadth of Kitty’s legacy. Her mother was pacing, hidden deep in the labyrinth, but every so often Elise could hear her feet kicking up gravel. With a plot worthy of a miniseries, an extensive cast, and a historical sweep, Paul succeeds in entertaining as well as enlightening.
