About this deal

I have both the SM7 and the RE20, and use them all the time in many recording applications such as voiceover, vocals, guitars, etc. The ETHOS Broadcast is a precision-made condenser microphone designed with the broadcast engineer in mind. The subtle nuance of how individual microphones can capture the character of a voice or musical instrument can make a massive difference. In truth, the mic is extremely natural in its reproduction, with a very pleasant weight and detail to the sound when used close-miced on voice.

My first opportunity to use the ETHOS came over the Christmas Holidays, in less than ideal situations. The lows are rich and full-bodied, even when the vocals are backed off the mic a bit – I liked the ETHOS's overall sound with most sources at a distance of four to six inches off the front of the mic. Burl Audio, under the direction of owner/designer Rich Williams, has developed some of the best new recording equipment over the last eight years. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. It doesn't overly color the source or embellish it - it feels accurate, but not clinical or sterile. I also used gentle RX Voice De-Noise doing about 6-7 db of reduction on the stroads story, and no NR at all on the one I tracked in a quiet studio. The Austrian Audio had a very slight edge on sound, but the Ethos won out because its sound was also excellent and its mounting system is incredibly well-thought-out.

You can remove the foam shield for a peek at the inner workings, screwing it apart for any required maintenance, but there's no sign of loose parts causing issues here. Eins vorweg: Ich bin Hobbyist und Enthusiast und komme vom Shure SM7B, das mich einige Jahre durch diverse Podcasts begleitet hat.

Based on Earthworks' reputation for building microphones with presence and clarity, the Ethos goes a step further, offering an intimacy and warmth that matches the sound of any voice while anticipating the needs of the sound engineer. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. It's not the easiest hardware to approach for beginners since you can't plug XLR cables directly into your average desktop Windows PC.

It excels at both, but I've not tested it enough on the guitar to determine if it's clearly a better or more balanced sound than more traditional options like the KM184. its pivot mount is such a wonderful design and it means you can put the stand or boom arm just about anywhere. In this way, consumers give each other guidance and give us the opportunity to continuously improve. Newcomers to the XLR standard will need a secondary journey to find an appropriately high-quality cable. You'll need to use a set of post-processing plugins to shape your recordings into something more professional. It will happily take the level from snare drums and guitar amps, and it’s equally content on things like acoustic guitar. If you're planning to record narration exclusively, you could happily connect this mic to a basic XLR mixer without boosting or live effects and edit recordings later. I've been using an MD-441 for voice work for many years, after previously trying a SM-57, SM-7, MD-421, TG-88 and then an RE-20.
