About this deal

Everything looks better in 4K – with four times the resolution of Full HD, you'll marvel at the detail and colour definition. PayPal Credit and PayPal Pay in 3 are trading names of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH. Of course it’s also a big screen so is going to highlight the limitations of SD more than a smaller screen would. One feature I do like is that if you setup your favourite tv channels the logos are displayed on the homepage in the same way as apps and movies etc and moving across them tells you what’s on now without needing to open the guide or switch to live tv.

For a couple with not much technical knowledge it was easy to set up and we seemed to be up and running in no time. In terms of usability, the Fire TV interface does a lot right, but the JVC’s processor does struggle to keep it running smoothly. It is fully functional and has been professionally refurbished, tested, inspected and cleaned to very good condition by qualified sellers.

If you want to see the JVC at its best, however, then fire up Netflix and seek out some Dolby Vision 4K content. Some mention that it has good sound, while others say that it is terrible and the volume settings were awful.

This CF890 comes with a Alexa remote making it easier to select your favourite show simply pick up the remote and ask Alexa. The blacks are also deeper than those produced by the Hisense, which suffered an odd green tinge, and the skin tones are warmer and more textured thanks to the red tones that come through in the cheeks and lips. Forget flipping between apps – you’ll find all your favourite shows on the home screen of this JVC Fire TV. The limited 4GB of internal storage also means that you won’t be able to install too many apps before running out of space, and you may need to add more storage in the form of a USB thumb drive or similar before too long. You'd obviously have to switch from 'TV speakers' to 'Home Cinema' (or whichever terms JVC use) but the latter option may only appear once HDMI-ARC is enabled. If you want reasonable quality HDR on the cheap the LG UM7400 is a far better bet but if you can find the JVC going cheap then it may still be worth considering as a bedroom or second-room TV. On first use the picture quality seems disappointing but with a bit of tweaking and a few hours running in its actually very good. Today, we have millions of users a month from around the world, and assess more than 1,000 products a year.

Flick to terrestrial TV or standard Full HD content, and the JVC struggles to effectively upscale to the native 4K resolution. That means you should be able to enjoy streaming HDR content from any of the main providers, with the added bonus that you’ll get the best results on any streaming service with Dolby Vision support, which currently includes Disney+ and Netflix. So much so, in fact, that it’s actually closer in performance to the LG UM7400 ( which we reviewed in August 2019). There are plenty of ports with 3x HDMI ports and 2 USB ports to connect your games consoles and set top boxes. You can all but forget about the glorious, eye-popping spectacle of pricier TVs, but dim the lights and toggle the Dolby Vision Dark profile on, and you’re rewarded with a pretty watchable picture. Don’t get me wrong, SD channels aren’t bad, I just notice the limitations more on this tv than I do on my Panasonic 50”.

It’s large and straightforward to navigate with tabs for the home screen, live TV, your videos, movies, TV, apps and settings. They mention that it's very good value for money, the graphics are good, and it'd be easy to set up. There’s oodles of detail on offer, and just enough brightness to give images a decent amount of pop and excitement. The stand offers a stylish touch, but it does jut forward, so if you need to squeeze a soundbar onto your TV stand you may want to double-check the measurements to ensure it will fit in front of the TV.Netflix was seemingly unaffected but watching content via Disney’s streaming service was blighted with hitches and jerks throughout. HDR10 and Dolby Vision bring an even greater depth of colour and brilliant brightness, so everything looks more real.
