About this deal

From the New York Times bestselling author of Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History comes the highly anticipated follow-up, a beautifully illustrated collectible detailing the lives of women creators around the world. Though it’s a noticeably US-focused selection, there are British women featured among the 50 too, such as Diane Abbot, Tessa Sanderson and Shirley Bassey, which is nice to see.

Readers will meet trailblazing women like Mary Blair, an American modernist painter who had a major influence on how color was used in early animated films, actor/inventor Hedy Lamar, environmental activist Wangari Maathai, architect Zaha Hadid, filmmaker Agnes Varda, and physicist Chien-Shiung Wu. Perfect for enquiring young minds, these engaging non-fiction books approach subjects from biography to nature and science to history in a variety of interesting ways. For me its also really important to showcase boldness and bravery can come in different shapes and sizes. It resulted in this beautiful and profound book, which chronicles the struggles and achievements of historic and contemporary black women. Featuring 18 trailblazing women artists and scientists, Think Big, Little One is the irresistible board book adaptation of Vashti Harrison's second book Little Dreamers: Visionary Women Around the World.

Each woman, depicted in clothing and costumes reflective of her time and vocation, seems to be looking within, mustering the strength necessary to persevere in the face of daunting odds. Vashti Harrison , author and illustrator of the bestselling Little Leaders: Bold Women In Black History , is an artist, author and filmmaker with a passion for storytelling. It wonderful to remind kids of what potential is in them and to see what others have already achieved. Debut author/illustrator Vashti Harrison pairs captivating text with stunning illustrations as she tells the stories of both iconic and lesser-known female figures of black history - from nurse Mary Seacole, to politician Diane Abbott, mathematician Katherine Johnson and singer Shirley Bassey. Among these biographies, young readers will find heroes, role models and everyday women who did extraordinary things.

She earned her MFA in film/video from California Institute of the Arts, where she snuck into animation and illustration classes to learn from Disney and DreamWorks legends. One Black History Month, Vashti Harrison illustrated one African American woman from history every day and posted the portraits online along with a small biography. New York Times bestselling author-illustrator Vashti Harrison shines a bold, joyous light on black men through history. The appeal is very much that of [ Goodnight Stories for] Rebel Girls or Frances Lincoln's Little People, Big Dreams series, but this is the only such collection to focus exclusively on black women. Backgrounds are minimal, rendered mostly in pale shades, which leaves the focus on the women and helps ground them in history. My daughter is only 18 months old now but I want her to grow up and be inspired by the great women who came before her.

There are lots of familiar names in the book such as: Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and Nina Simone, but there are some lesser known names (to me) so I'll be learning too. And Josephine Baker- world famous cabaret singer and dancer- was also a spy for the French resistance?I unfortunately cannot have any books shipped to me to be signed, so definitely keep an eye out for my local events! Among these biographies, readers will find aviators and artists, politicians and pop stars, athletes and activists. Sometimes non-fiction is also a fantastic way to tempt a reluctant reader into sitting down with a book.
