A traveling mercies prayer is said for someone who is going on a trip or starting a big journey. In the 19th century, these prayers were commonly said for missionaires, preachers, and volunteers who were traveling on behalf of the church. During those times travel was dangerous and unpredictable.

First of all, it should awaken gratitude. What a mercy it is that we are here this evening! You would think it more a mercy, perhaps, if certain of those seats had been left unoccupied, because those who sat there only a few days ago have gone the way of all flesh. If those pews could tell you where their former occupants are now, you would praise the preserving hand of God far more heartily. Why, I looked just now with solemn gaze upon a place where one was accustomed to sit who has heard me preach for years, but God has recently called him to his judgment bar; and I turn my head and look upon another place — just there! — where another friend used to sit, but this last week, while journeying in Wales for his health, he ran down a slope on one of the beautiful mountains a little more rapidly than he should have done, the fence at the bottom gave way, and he was translated into an eternal world. Dear God Almighty, I pray that your tender mercies will go before my friend and keep her away from trouble. You, yourself, Lord will be her guide and we will have cause to glorify your Holy name in the name of Jesus I pray.

His long and often private battle with cancer showed his inner strength and dignity. He stayed heroically strong until the end. Awesome God, thank you because I see your mercies morning by morning. I’m also amazed by your steadfast love; I know this for sure because you are always there when I call on you. You do not hide your face from me, neither do you forsake me. As a family at home (before the current Coronavirus emergency) we are so used to the convenience of large accessible shops where you can casually nip in to to get last-minute items. No such luxury for the Cowansand the Reids, who as part of normal everyday life need to plan menus, and when in Nairobi, sort supplies and then transport everything home. Your word says that when I pass through the waters, you will be with me, the rivers will not sweep over me, the fire will not burn me. Please help me to trust you.
