With these optimisations arriving as a free update, there’s no excuse not to revisit what can only be described as a technical masterclass. The team behind Metro Exodus has a lot to work on in terms of detail and world-building, but when they pivot to direct pathways the game truly shines as well as its ray-traced lighting on the PlayStation 5.

From your flashlight that helps you see in the dark underground tunnels to the moonlight shining the way for you in the desert, it’s all really well done. Using your lighter to burn away spider webs looks gorgeous and Molotov’s fires burned bright.

Bad air isn’t the only thing that the group have to worry about in Metro Exodus, however. There are mutants, cannibals, violent religious extremists, and many other colourful people that want to kill them. Their destination isn’t close either, but they find themselves a fully functioning train and that gets them going.

Firstly, the most in-your-face improvement you’ll notice within Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition comes has to be the graphical overhaul. The Enhanced Edition delivers a 4K image (~1512p with Temporal upscaling) at 60fps with ray tracing which leads to some of the best visuals I have seen on the, admittedly, very new consoles. From the open area sections, that show off amazingly rendered landscapes, to the enclosed sections benefiting from the improved lighting effects, this game is gorgeous… in an isolated post-apocalyptic way. Some of Metro’s signature weapons are the hand-crafted, pneumatic Tikhar and the spring loaded Helsing, and we found the perfect use for the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers to simulate the increased pressure or resistance when priming /charging these unique firearms. Maintaining high air pressure in the tank is essential to preserve the Tikhar’s lethality, and this has to be manually topped up by pumping the right trigger; as the pressure increases, so does the resistance on the trigger action so players can feel when maximum pressure has been attained. Metro Exodus is strikingly beautiful a lot of the time. The environmental artists deserve a serious raise because, despite serving up a number of different locales beyond the regular nuclear winter, Exodus never disappoints. The draw distance is sumptuous and the lighting is phenomenal, though it’s a game that looks best when it’s bleak. When the sun shows up, the textures can at times appear a little murky, which might make you welcome the rendering issues that can occur after re-loads, but this is a minor gripe. Character models have never been a strength of 4A Games and this effort is no exception, though they’ve got to the next level with the monstrous distortions that hound you in the wild. Even the manner in which the reflections are approximated (as it isn’t mirrored reflections, it’s all still already rendered scenes being remapped onto another surface) looks a lot better. Talking of resources, you can use them to fix and clean your weapons in Metro Exodus. You can find attachments that improve your weapons. However, the most exciting thing about weapon upgrades is when you find new ones. It’s not bad, just very shallow weapon progression. You also need to worry about your gas mask, making sure you have enough filters, but I never felt like I ever could run out. However, that might just be because I was on the easy difficulty.
